Syria al-Jawlani dissolves armed groups, ‘social pact for minorities’

17 Dicembre 2024

(Adnkronos) – Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) leader Mohammed al-Jawlani has announced his intention to dissolve the armed groups present in Syria and merge them into the state army. ”The fighters are ready to be part of the Ministry of Defense and will be subject to the law,” al-Jawlani said during a meeting with the Druze community. HTS reported in a note, explaining that al-Jawlani also proposed a ”social pact” which he believes is necessary to promote the coexistence of different ethnic groups in Syria and guarantee ”social justice”.

In addition to Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and allied armed factions, a multitude of armed groups are active in Syria. Among them are the Kurdish militias and the Turkish-backed fighters, who are in conflict with each other in northern Syria. ”We need the mentality of the state, not the mentality of the opposition,” said al-Jawlani.
