(Adnkronos) – The Trump administration is developing a plan that will allow immigration officials to quickly deny asylum requests without even the traditional interview with the applicant. This is revealed by Cbsnews, which obtained internal federal administration documents stating that Us Citizenship and Immigration Service officials will be able to automatically reject asylum requests submitted one year after the applicants’ arrival in the USA.
In this case, the latter will be immediately entered into deportation proceedings before immigration courts. In a statement to the American broadcaster, an immigration office spokesperson emphasized that the Trump administration is “considering several options” to clear a backlog of over a million asylum requests “created by the dangerous open border policies of the Biden administration.”
The new procedure, he added, “will avoid wasting time on asylum requests and diverting them to immigration courts, allowing illegal aliens to present their case to a judge.” But for Conchita Cruz, a lawyer specializing in immigration and asylum issues, this measure will “wrongly” place asylum seekers into deportation proceedings before they have the chance to explain why they made the request after their first year in the country.
