(Adnkronos) – The Serbian student list that won the elections in the country should form “a technical government” composed of experts with the necessary skills to implement the necessary reforms and bring Serbia back on the path to European Union accession. This is the hope of Sandro Gozi, MEP for Renew Europe and Secretary General of the European Democratic Party, expressed in an interview with Adnkronos after the vote in Serbia.
The MEP admits he doesn’t know what to expect regarding the future of the movement, which is very heterogeneous and united by the need to get rid of Vucic, but states that the next Serbian executive should work for about 18-24 months on the rule of law, transparency, the fight against corruption, freedom of the press and judicial independence, as well as on the revision of some electoral rules. Moreover, Gozi notes, the necessary skills for this process are already found within the student movement’s list.
Such a path would be “extremely important” for Serbia, for Serbs and for democracy, but also for Belgrade’s European journey. “These are currently the main obstacles in Serbia’s accession negotiations with the Union,” and resolving them “would allow us to accompany and support this process of democratic renewal,” explains the MEP, who has already authored a report on EU enlargement supported by the European Parliament.
