Nikkei Average Gives Up over 2,100 Points in Early Trading

19 Agosto 2026

Tokyo, Aug. 19 (Jiji Press)–Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 stock average briefly surrendered over 2,100 points on Wednesday morning, reflecting selling that hit high-tech issues. At 9:18 a.m., the index of 225 major issues listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange’s Prime section stood down 2,133.97 points, or 3.16 pct, from Tuesday at 65,326.76. Investors rushed to sell artificial intelligence- and semiconductor-related stocks from the outset of Tokyo trading, on the back of overnight falls in major U.S. stock indexes amid higher interest rates worldwide and soaring crude oil prices triggered by reignited concerns over the Middle East situation.
