Germany, poll: 44% of voters prefer the Grand Coalition

24 Febbraio 2025

(Adnkronos) – German voters prefer the Grand Coalition. As already emerged on the eve of the vote, a new poll confirms – after the elections – that a coalition between the CDU/CSU conservative bloc and the SPD Social Democrats is the favoured option.

According to a survey conducted by the YouGov research institute, 44% of respondents expressed their preference for a Grand Coalition made up of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Christian Social Union (CSU), together with the SPD.

25% would opt for a three-way coalition with the Greens, while 30% support a coalition that includes the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), despite the Union’s candidate for chancellor, Friedrich Merz, having ruled out any collaboration with the party. The poll was conducted yesterday evening after the polls closed, surveying 1,001 eligible voters.

The preliminary results of the vote to renew the Bundestag held yesterday give 28.52% of the votes to the Union (208 seats), 20.80% to the AfD (152 seats), 16.41% to the SPD (120 seats), 11.61% to the Greens (85 seats), 8.77% to the Linke (64 seats), 4.33% to the FDP and 4.97% to the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance, reports ZDF. A majority requires 316 seats: a CDU/CSU+SPD coalition would have 328, one between the CDU/CSU and the Greens only 293. A three-way coalition of CDU/CSU/SPD and Greens would reach 413.
