(Adnkronos) – Italy’s foreign minister Antonio Tajani is taking part in a G7 foreign ministers’ meeting in Cernay-la-Ville, France that will focus on the United States-Israel war against Iran and the Russia-Ukraine conflict, a foreign ministry statement said on Thursday.
Global governance reform and reconstruction will be the key theme on Thursday, while Friday’s sessions of the meeting will centre on cross-cutting threats, support for Ukraine and the escalating Middle East crisis, said the statement.
Saudi Arabia, Brazil, India and the Republic of Korea are attending Thursday’s meeting sessions, where discussions will centre on three topics: reform of the United Nations; reform of the peacekeeping system; and improving the efficiency of humanitarian supply chains, according to the statement.
The meeting will aim to give political impetus to these processes and and urge the implementation of effective United Nations reforms, the statement said.
Thursday will wrap up with a ‘Reconstruction’ themed working dinner in the same extended format but with the further addition of Ukraine and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the statement noted.
Discussion topics will include the reconstruction of the protective shelter at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, where Ukraine’s foreign minister Andrii Sibyha has voiced concern over nuclear safety in the country, especially the condition of the protective arch, which was damaged by a Russian drone attack in February 2025. Without an intervention, corrosion of the arch could lead to the structural failure of the NSC (New Safe Confinement) around 2030, Sibyha has warned.
The Cernay-la-Ville meeting could galvanise international commitment to the repair of the Chernobyl power plant’s protective arch and act as a catalyst for raising the necessary funds, which will be over 500 million euros, the statement said.
Ukraine’s energy minister Denis Shmyhal has stated that he had allocated over 31 million euros to safeguard the Chernobyl plant, with part of these funds earmarked for the protective arch, said the statement .
Tajani will reaffirm Italy’s firm support for Kyiv in defending Ukraine from the over-four-year-long Russian invasion and for US mediation efforts towards a peace settlement to the war, underlining the need to maintain strong pressure on Moscow through sanctions, according to the foreign ministry.
