Venezuela: Situation ‘extremely tense’ – Italy

3 Dicembre 2025

(Adnkronos) – Italy’s foreign minister Antonio Tajani on Monday described the standoff between the United States and Venezuela as “very tense” and said he hoped “there will be no war” amid a massive military buildup in the Caribbean and deadly US strikes since September on alleged drug trafficking boats off the South American country’s coast.

“The situation is very tense in Venezuela. It is a country where many things are not going well,” Tajani said on the sidelines of a Nato foreign ministers meeting in Brussels.

“We hope that the tension will ease and that there will be no war…the situation is worrying,” Tajani went on.

US president Donald Trump on Tuesday told reporters that any country that was sending illegal drugs to America could be subject to land strikes, “not just Venezuela.”

Venezuela’s socialist president Nicolas Maduro denies having links to the illegal drug trade. He and his government reject all criminal accusations, claiming the US is seeking regime change to gain control of Venezuela’s vast natural resources including oil.
