(Adnkronos) – Italian merchant ship ‘Grande Torino’ was among the first vessels to cross the Strait of Hormuz just hours after the signing of an interim deal to end the three-month United States-Israeli war on Iran, foreign minister Antonio Tajani wrote Thursday on X.
“It is now sailing toward the Orient. A success for Italian diplomacy. Good news for the resumption of commercial traffic and, in particular, for all the sailors on board and their families in Italy,” read the post.
Tajani’s Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi asssured him in a phonecall that the Grimaldi Group-owned ‘Grande Torino’, which had been stranded in the Persian Gulf for months, would be allowed safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz “in the coming hours”, Tajani wrote Wednesday on X.
US President Donald Trump and Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian on Wednesday inked an interim peace accord under which Tehran agreed to dilute its enriched uranium in return for large-scale financial relief including the immediate waiving of crippling oil US sanctions and a 300 billion dollar reconstruction fund backed by nations across the region pending a final agreement on Iran’s nuclear programme to be negotiated over the next two months.
Pakistan’s premier Shehbaz Sharif, whose country mediated the accord, wrote on X that it “shall enter into force with immediate effect”.
“As a first step, the Islamic Republic of Iran will instantly reopen the Strait of Hormuz and the United States of America will immediately lift the naval blockade,” Sharif wrote.
An official ceremony will take place Friday in Switzerland and technical talks will begin, Sharif stated.
