Tokyo, June 16 (Jiji Press)–Japan plans to fully digitize customs procedures for air passengers, including foreign visitors, by 2030, Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama said on Tuesday. Currently, passengers are still able to file declarations on paper, although electronic filing is recommended. The country needs to streamline customs procedures, as the government aims to raise the annual number of foreign visitors to the country to 60 million by 2030 after the figure exceeded 40 million for the first time last year.
