(Adnkronos) – Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz oil conduit ” highlights the fragility of international trade routes and the repercussions on our economies,” foreign minister Antonio Tajani said on Wednesday, noting Italy’s strenuous diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the United States-Israel conflict with Tehran.
“’What is happening in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz highlights the fragility of international trade routes and the repercussions on our economies,” Tajani told MPs at Question Time, referring to Iran’s attacks on Gulf countries including their energy infrastructure and closure of the key shipping lane to almost all vessels.
Iran’s blockage has left some 2,000 ships and around 2,000 seamen trapped near the Strait of Hormuz since joint US-Israeli attacks on Iran began in late February, according to the International Maritime Organization.
IMO has urged nations urgently end the blockade – which has caused energy prices to skyrocket and is harming the global economy.
“The government is at the forefront of diplomatic de-escalation and in support of the manufacturing sector,” Tajani said.
“The international situation is complex, but the government will always stand by businesses to turn current challenges into opportunties,” Tajani stated.
