Tokyo, March 3 (Jiji Press)–The Japanese government plans to make both surnames in the family registry and maiden names legally valid, Hitoshi Kikawada, minister for gender equality policy, said Tuesday. The comments by Kikawada at a press conference came a day after Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi told parliament that the government plans to allow the use of maiden names alone while considering requiring both names to be listed on documents used for strict identity verification, such as passports and driver’s licenses.
