Tokyo Inflation Slows to 2 Pct in Jan.

30 Gennaio 2026

Tokyo, Jan. 30 (Jiji Press)–Inflation in central Tokyo slowed to 2 pct year-on-year in January from 2.3 pct in the previous month, hitting the lowest level since October 2024, mainly due to a smaller rise in food prices excluding perishables, Japanese government data showed Friday. The core consumer price index, which excludes volatile fresh food prices, in the capital’s 23 wards came to 110.9 in January against the 2020 base of 100, rising for the 53rd consecutive month, the internal affairs ministry said. Food prices excluding fresh food climbed 5.6 pct, slower than the 6.2 pct pace in the previous month. This marked the fifth straight month of slowdown. Rice prices jumped 26 pct, a slowdown for the ninth consecutive month, after sharp rises that began around the summer of 2024. Energy prices fell 4.2 pct. Gasoline prices dropped 14.8 pct after the provisional gasoline tax surcharge was abolished in December. Electricity and city gas bills dropped 2 pct and 4.5 pct, respectively. The overall CPI, including fresh food prices, was up 1.5 pct. The index excluding fresh food and energy prices expanded 2.4 pct. END [Copyright The Jiji Press, Ltd.]
