(Adnkronos) – Turkey will return the Russian-made S-400 air defense system, purchased ten years ago, in an attempt to convince US President Donald Trump to approve the sale of F-35 fighter jets to the country. Haaretz writes, citing Bloomberg. Last week, US envoy Tom Barrack stated that Washington is conducting negotiations with Turkey regarding its intention to re-enter the F-35 program, from which it was expelled in 2020 as part of sanctions related to the purchase of a Russian-made air defense system. According to Barrack, “as stipulated by US law, Turkey must no longer use or possess the Russian-made S-400 system to re-enter the F-35 program.”
