(Adnkronos) – Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is reportedly preparing a reshuffle of his Socialist Party (Psoe) to try to survive the accusations of corruption, after the arrest of his loyalist Santos Cerdan and the calls for resignation that came from the Popular Party. El Paìs writes this, citing several sources and defining the current one as ”the most difficult period for Sanchez in seven particularly complex years of government”, between a pandemic and elections that seemed lost in 2023. In order not to throw in the towel, according to El Paìs, the Psoe leader intends to strengthen the party’s code of ethics and internal controls.
There is therefore great anticipation for Sanchez’s moves at the federal committee on Saturday and at the party congress next Wednesday, 9 July. Sources report an “important reshuffle within the Psoe” in sight to try to fill the enormous credibility gap created by the Cerdan case. People close to Sanchez have ruled out that the premier is thinking of an extraordinary congress of the Psoe, but believe that he wants to aim for significant changes in the way the party operates, controls and manages internally.
Probably, the sources contacted by El Paìs report, there will be changes in the code of ethics, including direct expulsion for those who hire prostitutes. Changes are also foreseen in the control system, looking for solutions similar to those used by large companies. Meanwhile, several sources agree that the in-depth examination of the Psoe’s accounts has found no trace of illicit financing and other people involved besides the former party general secretary Cerdan.
In any case, the Psoe is “in shock”, writes El Paìs, and it is not excluded that some managers will ask for an extraordinary congress, as well as quicker and more decisive actions. What seems clear, the newspaper underlines, is that Sanchez has no intention of giving up, determined to do everything possible to get out of the crisis that has hit his party.
