(Adnkronos) – Hundreds of people, mainly Tunisians, have set off on a convoy to Gaza, with the aim of “breaking the siege” on the Palestinian territory. The initiative, which involves nine buses and about a thousand participants, including doctors and activists from Algeria, Morocco, Libya and Mauritania, aims to arrive in Rafah “by the end of the week,” Jawaher Channa, spokeswoman for the Tunisian Joint Action Coordination group for Palestine, told AFP. The “Soumoud” convoy, which means ‘steadfastness’ in Arabic, aims to perform “a symbolic act”. “We are not bringing aid, but a political message,” explained the organizers.
The caravan will pass through Libya and Egypt “even if Cairo has not yet provided transit permits,” explained Channa, according to whom the convoy should not encounter problems crossing Libya, “whose people have historically supported the Palestinian cause”.
