Taiwan, Lai remembers Tienanmen, ‘at the forefront to defend democracy’

4 Giugno 2025

(Adnkronos) – On the 36th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square protests, Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te reiterated Taiwan’s commitment to defending democracy and human rights. “Not only do we refuse to forget history, but we must implement our core values every day with confidence and resilience,” he said during the meeting of the central committee of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), of which he is also chairman.

Lai stressed that every year Taiwanese society lights candles in memory of the victims, not only to commemorate, but to give continuity to that spirit of freedom. Recalling the wounds of the past, including the White Terror period, he claimed the island’s democratic path and warned against the expansion of authoritarianism: “Taiwan is at the forefront of the global defense of democracy and will continue to collaborate with partners who share the same ideals to protect the rule of law and freedom.”
