(Adnkronos) – John Wadepul will be the Foreign Minister and Katherina Reiche the Economy Minister of the new German government led by Friedrich Merz. As announced, the Cdu today announced the names of the team of “its” ministers of the coalition government with the Spd, which will take office next week.
The appointment of Wadephul, 62, a longtime close ally and foreign policy advisor to Merz, had already been anticipated in recent days by the German media, which stressed that the politician originally from Schleswig-Holstein will become the first Cdu foreign minister in almost 60 years. Wadephul is on pro-Ukrainian positions and is known for having asked for more military aid for Kyiv.
With the appointment to the leadership of the Economy, Reiche will return to politics after having spent several years among the managers of the German energy giant E.ON. Among the seven ministers chosen by the next chancellor’s party is Karsten Wildberger, a manager called to lead the new ministry for digitization and state modernization.
MP Nina Warken will go to Health, Patrick Schnieder to Transport and Karin Prien to Education. Thorsten Frei, close to the next chancellor Merz, will be the head of the chancellery. Today the formal approval by the Cdu, during a small party conference, of the coalition agreement with the Social Democrats is also expected. The Cdu’s ally, the Bavarian Csu, has not yet formalized the choice of its ministers, but Dpa sources report that Alexander Dobrindt will be appointed Interior Minister.
