(Adnkronos) – Italy’s foreign minister Antonio Tajani on Thursday welcomed Irans’ re-opening of the key Strait of Hormuz waterway to maritime traffice, hailing it as “a positive sign including for the entire world of commerce.”
“The restoration of freedom of navigation in the waterway means we can look to the future with greater optimism, “Tajani said as he left the the centre-right European People’s Party pre-European Council meeting.
“That said, we still need 60 days to work on this (peace deal between the United States and Iran) and finalise the details,”Tajani said, referring to the interim agreement signed by both countries on Wednesday that gives the sides two months to reache a final agreement on Iran’s nuclear programme.
“But seeing ships passing through Hormuz—including Italian ships—is encouraging for everyone,” he continued, noting that Italy’s foreign ministry is working to facilitate the passage through the Strait of two more ships.
