(Adnkronos) – A Russian court has imposed a fine of seven million rubles (about 74,850 euros) on the Telegram platform for refusing to remove some channels accused of inciting “terrorist attacks” and promoting anti-government protests. According to Tass, among the channels that remained online were some that called for attacks on railway infrastructure to “support the Ukrainian Armed Forces” in the context of the conflict that began in February 2022.
According to the court, Telegram ignored the request of the Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media (Roskomnadzor), which had ordered the removal of a series of contents deemed to be extremist. The case documents indicate that “Telegram Messenger Inc., as the owner of the information source, did not remove a web page containing calls for extremist activities”, despite the notifications sent by the regulatory body to report the violation of current regulations and request the blocking of access to the sources in question.
This is not the first action against Telegram: already in October 2024, the platform was sanctioned with a fine of four million rubles (about 42,770 euros) for similar facts, in line with a sentence issued in August of the same year, also for four million rubles.
