Greece, clashes between demonstrators and police in Athens as they remember train crash victims

28 Febbraio 2025

(Adnkronos) – Clashes broke out in the capital between youths armed with petrol bombs and police who responded with tear gas during demonstrations marking the second anniversary of Greece’s worst rail tragedy, live television footage from Greek broadcasters showed.

As some 200,000 people gathered in the city centre to remember the 57 victims, mostly students, who died in the accident on 28 February 2023, some youths began throwing stones and petrol bombs at police guarding parliament.

The incident involved a passenger train and a freight train that collided near the city of Larissa. The toll was tragic, with at least 57 dead and many injured. The disaster was caused by human error: railway staff reportedly gave the go-ahead to two trains on the same track, without adequate safety measures. The incident has drawn strong criticism of Greece’s rail safety management and sparked numerous protests by rail workers.
