Duty clash, postal service suspends arrival of parcels from China and Hong Kong

5 Febbraio 2025

(Adnkronos) – The trade clash between Washington and Beijing continues. The United States Postal Service has announced that it has temporarily suspended the arrival of international parcels from China and Hong Kong “until further notice”.

“Effective February 4, the Postal Service will temporarily suspend acceptance of inbound international parcels originating only from China and Hong Kong until further notice. Letter and flat mail will not be impacted,” reads a short notice on its website.

The decision comes just days after President Donald Trump signed an executive order ending the de minimis exemption, a rule that allowed anyone to send parcels worth less than $800 to the United States without paying tariffs or undergoing inspections. According to CNN, this type of shipment is typical of Chinese-linked e-commerce companies, such as Shein and Temu, which have exploited these tax breaks to build their low-price product business models.
