(Adnkronos) – Donald Trump has asked the Supreme Court to block the hearing, set for Friday, for the sentencing of the New York trial in which he was convicted of falsifying financial documents to cover up the sum paid to Stormy Daniels to pay for her silence about their relationship.
“The Court should order an immediate halt to all further proceedings in the trial to prevent serious injustice and harm to the institution of the presidency and the operations of the federal government,” wrote the lawyers of the president-elect, who have asked for the conviction to be overturned and the case dismissed, based on the Supreme Court ruling on immunity and the tycoon’s election. “The Supreme Court’s historic decision on immunity, the Constitution and jurisprudence, require that this baseless legal scam be dismissed immediately,” said Trump spokesman Steven Cheung.
Last week, Judge Juan Merchan upheld Trump’s conviction, setting the reading of the sentence for Jan. 10, but already anticipating that there will be no prison sentence. If Friday’s hearing is not stayed by the Supreme Court, Trump will become the first president in history to arrive at the White House with a criminal conviction.
