Georgia, Council of Europe envoy to Tbilisi to verify compliance with commitments Tbilisi

18 Dicembre 2024

(Adnkronos) – The Council of Europe envoy, Alan Berset, is expected in Georgia today to verify whether the conditions exist to continue cooperation between the international organization and the Georgian government after the violent repression of pro-European protests following accusations of fraud in the legislative elections of last October and the approval of ‘Russian’ laws in the previous months.

“As a country of the Council of Europe since 1999, Georgia is obliged to respect its fundamental commitments: democracy, the protection of human rights and respect for the law. In the current situation and in this worrying context, the Council of Europe calls on all parties to avoid escalating tensions. It urges the authorities to avoid the disproportionate use of force and to respect fundamental freedoms, in particular freedom of expression and assembly. These principles are essential to guarantee the stability of the country and to meet the expectations of Georgians,” Berset said.
