South Korea, President Yoon Suk-yeol’s party calls for his expulsion

4 Dicembre 2024

(Adnkronos) – Han Dong Hoon, conservative leader of the People Power Party to which President Yoon Suk Yeol belongs, has asked the president to leave the party following the controversy sparked by the passage of the martial law, later revoked by parliament.

Han said he submitted the request to Prime Minister Han Duck Soo, and to chief of staff Chung Jin Seok. According to the Yonhap news agency, Han, who is also a member of Parliament, confirmed that he submitted the request during a press conference, after the opposition and unions had asked Yoon to resign as president.

His remarks came after a meeting between top party officials at the prime minister’s residence in Samcheong Dong, which was also attended by members of the government and the president’s office. Han reported that he concluded that it was appropriate to request the departure from the party of the president, who already suffered from low approval ratings before declaring martial law.
