Iran, dissident rapper released, ‘symbol’ of protests for Mahsa

2 Dicembre 2024

(Adnkronos) – Dissident Iranian rapper Toomaj Salehi, who was sentenced to death last April for his support of the anti-government protests and ‘Woman, Life and Freedom’, the movement born in September two years ago after the death of Mahsa Amini while in police custody, has been released from prison. This was reported by the Guardian.

Salehi was arrested in October 2022 for some public statements in support of the protests. The rapper denounced that he was forced into long periods of solitary confinement and subjected to torture in prison that caused fractures in his hands and a leg.

In June of this year, the Iranian Supreme Court overturned the death sentence against him after a strong international mobilization in support of the rapper. Negin Niknaam, a spokesman for Salehi, said neither he nor his family had been informed of his release. “They told them at 11:30 p.m. that he would be released immediately. His father was sleeping and they discreetly took him home in the middle of the night because they feared that because of his popularity, people would gather outside the prison,” he said.
