(Adnkronos) – Dublin has approved for the first time the appointment of a Palestinian ambassador to Ireland, after recognizing the State of Palestine in the spring. According to government sources, Jilan Wahba Abdalmajid, the diplomat who is currently head of the Palestinian mission in Ireland, will take up the new post.
At the end of May, Ireland, together with Spain and Norway, officially recognized the “sovereign and independent” State of Palestine with the aim of moving towards peace in the Middle East. A week later, Slovenia did the same. These countries have been among the most critical voices in Europe towards Israel since the start of the war in the Gaza Strip on 7 October, following the unprecedented Hamas attack on Israeli soil.
On 29 September, diplomatic relations were formally established between Ireland and Palestine. A few weeks later, on 17 October, the Palestinian government of Mohammed Mustafa officially notified Dublin of its intention to transform its diplomatic representation in Ireland from a mission to an embassy. This change will allow staff to enjoy the full range of privileges and immunities applicable under the 1961 Vienna Convention guaranteeing the protection of diplomats.
