(Adnkronos) – The situation for Italians in Iran is “pretty calm” and they have all been “geolocalised”, foreign minister Antonio Tajani said after local media reported explosions in Tehran and the Israeli army said early on Saturday it was carrying out precision strikes on “military targets” in Iran.
“There have been no problems for the 450 Italian citizens who are in Iran,” Tajani said on the sidelines of a Forza Italian party meeting.
“I spoke to the ambassador a short while ago. Everything is quite calm for our fellow citizens whomwe have registered with the ‘Safe Travel’ app, so they are geolocalised,” Tajani added.
The Israeli Defence Force (IDF) attacks involved scores of aircraft, including jets and drones. The targets included Iran’s air defences, as well as missile and drone production, and launch facilities
IDF said it hit around 20 targets in the three-hour attack including missile manufacturing facilities, surface-to-air-missiles and other military sites.
The Iranian military confirmed that four soldiers had died, two “while battling projectiles” during the air strikes.
Israel said the attacks were retaliation for a barrage of over 180 missiles fired against it by Iran earlier in October in a large-scale attack that further heightened fears of an all-out regional war.
The majority of the missiles fire by Iran were intercepted by Israel and a “defensive coalition led by the United States”, the IDF stated.
