(Adnkronos) – The government is striving for the release of Alberto Trentini and all Italian prisoners detained in Venezuela, foreign minister Antonio Tajani stated on Friday – almost a year to the day since the aid worker was arrested and held in prison.
“We are making every effort to secure the release of Trentini and all our other compatriots who are being held illegally,” Tajani said.
“They are not imprisoned because they are dangerous criminals, arms or drug traffickers,” Tajani continued.
Tajani was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the Interinstitutional International Anti-Corruption Coordination Table taking place in Rome.
Trentini, who works for the Humanity and Inclusion NGO, was arrested at a checkpoint while travelling from Caracas to the southeast city of Guasdalito on 15 November last year.
Since then, Trentini has been held at prison in Guatire, on the outskirts of the capital and has had scarce contact with his family.
Over 110,700 people have signed a petition on the change.org website calling on Italy’s authorities and the United Nations to obtain Trentini’s release.
