Nepal, three Italian climbers hit by avalanches, ‘one is dead’

3 Novembre 2025

(Adnkronos) – Three Italian climbers have been hit by avalanches in Tibet in the last few hours in two separate incidents. One compatriot, as reported by the online edition of the local newspaper Kathmandu Post, which does not state his identity, is said to have died along with six other people – three US citizens, one Canadian, and two Nepalese – after an avalanche swept through the base camp of Yalung Ri (5,630 meters) in the Rolwaling valley. However, an official confirmation of the Italian’s death is still missing; he left five days ago for an excursion with local guides and other foreigners. According to reports, he is still missing at the Italian consulate in Calcutta.

The other two Italian climbers reported missing are Stefano Farronato and Alessandro Caputo, who were caught by Cyclone Montha while attempting to climb Panbari, 6,887 meters high, in western Nepal. A fourth Italian, who remained at base camp, was rescued yesterday by helicopter. The Farnesina (Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs) and the competent Italian embassy in New Delhi are following their case.

In recent hours, incidents have multiplied along the trekking trails of the Himalayas, many of which have involved foreign hikers. Difficulties on the ground, altitude, and unpredictable weather conditions make rescue operations complex, often hindered by poor communication coverage and the fragmentation of coordination centers in the most remote areas.
