(Adnkronos) – Italy’s foreign minister Antonio Tajani will on Tuesday take part in the 2025 Sakharov prize ceremony which is being live-streamed from the European Parliament’s plenary chamber in Strasbourg.
Tajani and cabinet under-secretary Alberto Barachini will address the event via video-link from the Esperienza Europa-David Sassoli headquarters at Piazza Venezia in central Rome, according to a statement.
Speakers from Strasbourg will include European Parliament Vice-Presidents Pina Picierno and Antonella Sberna, and MEPs Carlo Fidanza, Nicola Zingaretti, Letizia Moratti, Paolo Borchia, and Danilo Della Valle, said the statement
Catholic charity Community of Sant’Egidio president Marco Impagliazzo and members of the Italian and foreign press will also attend the ceremony.
Finalists for this year’s prize are imprisoned journalists Andrzej Poczobut (Belarus) and Mzia Amaglobeli (Georgia), nominated by the European People’s Party, reporters and cameramen from Gaza, supported by the Socialists, and the young anti-graft protesters in Serbia nominated by the pro-European Renew group.
The top human rights award honours individuals and groups defending human rights, democracy, and free expression, named after Soviet dissident Andrei Sakharov.
