Japan, Sanae Takaichi first female premier, only two women in her government

21 Ottobre 2025

(Adnkronos) – Only two women in the government of Sanae Takaichi, Japan’s first female premier. Satsuki Katayama has been named to head the Ministry of Finance, becoming the first woman in the role, and Kimi Onoda is the choice for the Ministry of Economic Security. In total, there are 19 appointments. And there are only three women, including Takaichi, fewer than the record of five during the time of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, local media highlight, and well below promises.

Among the announced appointments, reported by Kyodo news agency, Takaichi – a staunch conservative and a figure considered divisive – is betting on Ryosei Akazawa, Japan’s chief negotiator in difficult talks with the United States on tariffs, for the Ministry of Commerce. There is also a place for Takaichi’s opponents in the early October race for the leadership of the Liberal Democratic Party: the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, the first woman at the top of the political force, assigns Shinjiro Koizumi, son of former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, the Ministry of Defense, and Toshimitsu Motegi the Foreign Affairs portfolio.
