Tokyo, Oct. 21 (Jiji Press)–Japan’s House of Representatives, the all-important lower chamber of the Diet, or parliament, elected Sanae Takaichi, president of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, as new prime minister to succeed Shigeru Ishiba on Tuesday. She garnered 237 votes in the election, while 149 votes went to Yoshihiko Noda, leader of the main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, and 28 votes to Yuichiro Tamaki, head of the Democratic Party for the People, another opposition party. Takaichi was elected president of the LDP on Oct. 4, after Ishiba announced in early September his decision to step down following the party’s major setback in last year’s Lower House election and this July’s Upper House election.
