Tokyo, Oct. 2 (Jiji Press)–Three major Japanese department store operators have posted year-on-year growth in same-store sales for September. According to their reports released Wednesday, sales rose 7.9 pct at Daimaru Matsuzakaya Department Stores Co., 4.4 pct at Takashimaya Co. and 3.5 pct at Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings Ltd. Summer clothes sold well early in September when the heat continued. Later in the month, sales of autumn clothes, such as light outerwear, were strong as the temperatures dropped. In addition, out-of-store sales to major customers fared well, while events including product fairs attracted visitors. Sales of tax-free items, an indicator of purchases by visitors from abroad, climbed 11.8 pct at Daimaru Matsuzakaya and 2.7 pct at Takashimaya, while Isetan Mitsukoshi incurred a fall of 3.8 pct reflecting sluggish demand for luxury brand items. “The number of visitors to Japan in October is expected to increase due to the long holiday in China,” an Isetan Mitsukoshi official said. “We’ll continue to monitor the situation closely.” END [Copyright The Jiji Press, Ltd.]
