Germany, Matthias Miersch new Spd parliamentary group leader

7 Maggio 2025

(Adnkronos) – Matthias Miersch, current general secretary of the German Social Democratic Party, will be the new parliamentary group leader in the Bundestag. This was announced by Dpa, which cites informed sources according to whom Miersch was elected by over 80% of his party’s parliamentarians. A 56-year-old lawyer, Miersch will resign from his position as general secretary of the party – which he has held since October 2024 – at the latest during the party congress at the end of June.

A representative of the left wing of the party, Miersch is considered close to the Spd leader and Vice-Chancellor Lars Klingbeil. Among other things, he will be responsible for negotiations on the outstanding issues in the coalition government agreement with Jens Spahn, his counterpart in the parliamentary group of the conservative alliance Cdu/Csu.
