(Adnkronos) – The European Public Prosecutor’s Office (Eppo) has launched an investigation into the Spanish railway control bodies and the country’s public accounts, carried out by the Central Operational Unit (Ucc) of the Spanish Civil Guard, as announced in a statement. The intervention follows the opening of an investigation into possible fraud against EU funds intended for the renewal and modernization of safety, signaling and communication systems on the Madrid-Seville high-speed railway line, where the serious accident occurred near Urda, in the province of Toledo, at the end of October.
The investigators are targeting the Railway Infrastructure Manager (Adif), the State Railway Safety Agency (Aesf) and the Spanish Court of Auditors. “This exceptional confirmation comes following high public interest and no further information will be released at this stage,” highlights the European Prosecutor’s Office statement, which recalls that another investigation related to the same high-speed line was opened last March.
