(Adnkronos) – Spanish Transport Minister Oscar Puente has ruled out resignation, stating that his way of “being responsible is to face the situation”. During a press conference on the Urda railway accident at the Ministry of Transport, Puente said that “my duty is to solve the problem and provide explanations”. The request for resignation, Puente stated, is a decision to be evaluated “based on the facts and not on the pressure of the moment, which is clearly very strong”.
Regarding responsibility for the incident, the minister stated that the investigation is ongoing. “Tragedies happen and we must face them,” he declared, adding that his “trust in Adif (the public company responsible for the management and development of the railway network in Spain, editor’s note) and its staff is unconditional, but no one is infallible.” “If there have been shortcomings in controls or organization, and if there have been individual responsibilities, these will be pursued through appropriate channels,” he emphasized.
