Ukraine, EU renews individual sanctions against Russia

14 Marzo 2025

(Adnkronos) – The EU Council this morning renewed for six months, until next September 15, the individual sanctions adopted against individuals who have helped, in various capacities, the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine. The renewal came unanimously, by written procedure, it was learned in Brussels, after the Polish presidency had proposed a compromise text last night that partially accepted Hungary’s requests, which, as is now customary, used its veto to obtain concessions.

In this case, Budapest was asking for the removal from the list of some oligarchs, including Alfa Bank founder Mikhail Fridman, a Russian billionaire born in Ukraine who also holds Israeli citizenship, who sued Luxembourg, where one of his holdings is based, asking the Grand Duchy for billions of dollars in damages. Four individuals were removed from the sanctions list, plus three more people who have since died. Fridman, however, remains on the list of individuals subject to asset freezes and travel bans: his name has not been removed from the list.
