(Adnkronos) – Federal agents today conducted a search of Democratic congresswoman Ilhan Omar’s home in Washington. A Justice Department spokesperson confirmed this, adding that the search was conducted as part of an ongoing investigation.
Sources cited by Abcnews revealed that the investigation is linked to Omar’s immigration documents. She arrived as a refugee in the United States at the age of 13 with her family, fleeing Somalia where she was born in 1982. In 2000, she became a US citizen.
“Today in the Washington area, Homeland Security Investigations agents conducted a search authorized by a judicial warrant obtained by the Justice Department,” a department spokesperson said, referring to “an ongoing federal investigation.” Homeland Security Investigations is an elite investigative unit of ICE, traditionally used to combat arms trafficking and human trafficking networks.
The search comes 22 days before the midterm elections, raising doubts about its timing, and after White House border czar Tom Homan confirmed last month that an investigation is underway into the left-wing Democratic figure, against whom Trump launched harsh attacks in recent months, calling her ‘garbage’ because she is Somali.
“If someone has committed an immigration violation, if they have committed marriage fraud or anything like that, whether they are a member of Congress or not, no one is above the law,” Homan said, stating that HSI continued to investigate allegations that Trump and other Republicans have repeatedly leveled against the Democrat of fraudulently obtaining citizenship, claiming, without showing evidence, that Omar allegedly married her brother to become an American citizen.
“We can go in one direction or another, and we’re going in the wrong direction if we keep taking this garbage into our country,” Trump said while ICE conducted its controversial campaign of arrests and deportations in Minnesota, specifically targeting the Somali community. “Ilhan Omar is garbage, her friends are garbage, these are not working people.” “His obsession with me is disturbing, I hope he gets the help he desperately needs,” was the response from the congresswoman elected in Minnesota to Trump’s attacks.
