(Adnkronos) – The alert level at the US bases of Lakenheath and Mildenhall, in Suffolk, eastern England, has been raised to ‘Charlie’, the second highest. The BBC reported this, highlighting that the ‘Charlie’ level is generally activated when an incident occurs or when intelligence indicates a possible threat of attack. Lakenheath hosts US Air Force fighters, while Mildenhall is mainly used for in-flight refueling. The heightened alert comes after arrests made in recent days near the RAF Fairford base in Gloucestershire, another British base used by US forces.
Five men were arrested after the discovery of suspicious material and the intervention of bomb disposal experts, which also led to the precautionary evacuation of the area. The arrested individuals were initially detained on suspicion of explosives-related offenses and preparation of a terrorist act, but were subsequently released on bail. Investigations, as highlighted by the British police, are ongoing to clarify what happened and the possible involvement of foreign individuals.
