Venezuela: Italy still trying to repatriate imprisoned aid worker Alberto Trentin

5 Marzo 2025

(Adnkronos) – Italy’s government is striving to bring home aid worker Alberto Trentin – who has been in incommunicado detention in Caracas, Venezuela since his arrest on 15 November – foreign minister Antonio Tajani said on Wednesday.

“We are continuing to work to try to bring Alberto Trentin back to Italy, we are not giving up on any initiative but I must say that it is not proving easy,” Tajani told reporters.

Candlelit vigils, flash mobs and a petition on change.org have been organised for 45-year-old Trentin, from the northeast Veneto region, urging his release.

Venezuela’s authorities have not stated the reason for Trentin’s arrest in the course of his work with French NGO Humanity and Inclusion.

No charges have been pressed against Trentin, who is said to have a health condition and to have been denied all contact with his family, lawyers and consular representatives.
