(Adnkronos) – The Republican-majority U.S. House of Representatives has approved a resolution to limit President Donald Trump’s powers regarding the war in Iran, with 220 votes in favor and 204 against. Seven Republicans – Representatives Thomas Massie of Kentucky, Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania, Warren Davidson of Ohio, Tom Barrett of Michigan, Nancy Mace of South Carolina, Mariannette Miller-Meeks of Iowa, and Zach Nunn of Iowa – voted in favor of the resolution along with all Democrats present.
The last time the House adopted a similar resolution with bipartisan support was on July 23, when only four Republicans backed the initiative. Specifically, two Iowa Republicans voted for the withdrawal of U.S. military forces from Iran. The joint resolution, sponsored by Democratic Representative Seth Moulton of Massachusetts, calls on the president to end the deployment of U.S. armed forces in hostilities against Iran. The resolution, symbolic in nature and an expression of the House’s opinion, now moves to the Senate for consideration.
Even if the upper chamber were to approve it, a joint resolution does not have the force of law and is not subject to veto or presented to the president. This is the sixth time in recent months that the House of Representatives has considered a resolution, presented by Democrats, on war powers concerning Iran.
