Heavy Rain Forecast in Kanto, Other Regions Mon.

Tokyo, Sept. 6 (Jiji Press)–The Pacific side of Japan’s Tohoku northeastern region as well as the Kanto eastern and the Tokai central regions are expected to have heavy rain on Monday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said Sunday. The heavy rain forecast is based on an estimate that a front located off the Pacific will move to the north Monday and a low-pressure system will develop off the Tohoku region’s Sanriku coast as a result, according to the agency. The agency called for caution against landslides, flooding of low-lying areas and swollen rivers, as well as lightning strikes and wind gusts. Linear precipitation zone information was issued for Tohoku, Kanto and Tokai. Specifically, linear precipitation zones may develop until early Monday in Tokyo’s Izu Islands, until Monday morning in Aichi and Mie prefectures, until shortly before noon Monday in Shizuoka Prefecture, and from late Sunday night until shortly before noon Monday in Tokyo, excluding the Izu and Ogasawara islands, as well as in neighboring Saitama, Chiba and Kanagawa prefectures. There also are possibilities of linear precipitation zones forming from the small hours of Monday until shortly before noon in Ibaraki, Tochigi and Gunma prefectures, from early Monday until shortly after noon in Fukushima Prefecture, from Monday morning until the evening in Miyagi Prefecture, and from shortly before noon Monday until the night in Iwate Prefecture. Some Pacific side areas in eastern and western Japan had heavy rain Sunday due to the front and Typhoon Krovanh, the 24th typhoon of the year, which was located near the island of Minamidaitojima in the southernmost prefecture of Okinawa. In Hachijojima, one of the Izu Islands, rainfall amounted to 84.0 millimeters in one hour until shortly after 6:35 a.m. Sunday and reached 291.5 millimeters in the 12 hours until 10:50 a.m. As of 3 p.m. Sunday, Typhoon Krovanh was traveling east-northeast over the sea some 100 kilometers west of Minamidaitojima at a speed of 15 kilometers per hour. It had a central pressure of 992 hectopascals, registering a maximum sustained wind speed of 18 meters per second and a maximum instantaneous wind speed of 25 meters per second. Wind speeds were 15 meters per second or more in areas within about 500 km southwest and 330 km northeast of the center of the typhoon. The typhoon is forecast to turn into a tropical depression by Monday afternoon over the sea northeast of Minamidaitojima. In the 24 hours until 6 p.m. Monday, rainfall is seen reaching up to 300 millimeters in Tokai, up to 250 millimeters in the Kanto-Koshin eastern to central regions, up to 200 millimeters in Tohoku and the Kinki western region, up to 100 millimeters in the southern part of the Kyushu southwestern region and up to 80 millimeters in the Amami Islands region in Kagoshima Prefecture in southern Kyushu. In the following 24 hours until 6 p.m. Tuesday, the maximum amount of rain is forecast at 200 millimeters in Tokai, 120 millimeters in Kinki and 80 millimeters in Kanto-Koshin.
