US, alarm over mail-in voting, ‘millions risk not receiving ballots’

(Adnkronos) – Millions of Americans risk not receiving their mail-in ballots in time, or not receiving them at all, for the November 3 midterm elections due to the new IT system developed by the United States Postal Service (USPS). This is the alarm raised by a whistleblower and made public by Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal, according to whom the system was developed “roughly and hastily” to comply with a decree signed in March by President Donald Trump, which imposes stricter rules for mail-in voting. “‘Potentially, millions of American voters may not receive their ballot in time or at all for the upcoming elections,’ warned the source, who, according to Whistleblower Aid, has direct knowledge of the new system.”

The decree provides for the creation of a federal list of eligible voters and requires the USPS to deliver mail-in ballots only to people on the list. The reform would have been implemented “secretly and hastily” and, according to Blumenthal, would also risk violating a recent judicial decision that again suspended Trump’s measure. The senator requested clarification by Friday from USPS Director David Steiner. A federal judge ruled last week that it would be “practically impossible” for states to comply with the new provisions before the November elections. In 2024, nearly a third of American voters cast their ballots by mail.
