Nikkei Snaps 5-Day Winning Streak on Chip Selling

18 Agosto 2026

Tokyo, Aug. 18 (Jiji Press)–Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 stock average fell for the first time in six trading days on Tuesday, as heavy selling hit semiconductor-related stocks. Investor sentiment was dampened by higher crude oil prices and rising long-term interest rates amid turmoil in the Middle East. The index of 225 major issues listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange’s Prime section finished down 1,759.52 points, or 2.54 pct, from Monday to 67,460.73. Of stocks listed on the Prime section, 50 pct lost ground, while 46 pct advanced. Although the Nikkei average declined, the broader market remained relatively firm, an official at a major securities house said. END [Copyright The Jiji Press, Ltd.]
