(Adnkronos) – At least 15 people have died and 27 are missing after an overcrowded ferry capsized on Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe. Local authorities reported that the vessel, which provides transport service between the northern city of Kariba and several fishing villages, capsized yesterday after encountering very high waves. According to a statement from Zimbabwe’s civil protection unit, there were 114 adult passengers, five crew members, and some children on board, despite a maximum capacity of 90 people.
“So far, 77 passengers have been rescued by Matusadonha rescue teams and other rescuers,” the Civil Protection said, adding that “15 bodies have also been recovered.” Approximately 27 people are still missing. Lake Kariba is located on the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, over 300 kilometers northeast of the capital Harare. It is the world’s largest artificial lake by volume.
