(Adnkronos) – Italy on Wednesday said it is “unacceptable” that Nicaragua is sheltering former Red Brigade member and convicted killer Alessio Casmirri, who was handed a life sentence in absentia in 1985 for the March 1978 murders in Rome of then-premier Aldo Moro’s security detail, his abduction by the far-left terror group and assassination after 55 days in captivity.
“It is unacceptable” for Italy that Nicaragua should grant asylum to Alessio Casimirri, a dangerous Red Brigades terrorist, who is guilty of the murder of Aldo Moro,” Tajani wrote on X.
Tajani made the remarks in an address to the conservative ‘Libertas’ forum in Madrid on Wednesday which had a focus on Europe-Ibero-America cooperation as well as on freedom and democracy, the rule of law and global challenges.
“We are here today in Madrid with our Latin American brothers to reaffirm the Italian government’s firm stance in favour of democracy, freedom, and the rule of law throughout Latin America,” Tajani said.
“I want to be clear. We do not share any part of the vision held by extremist governments such as Nicaragua’s,” Tajani continued.
“It is a country that offers protection to a dangerous (far-left) Red Brigades terrorist like Alessio Casimirri, who killed Aldo Moro, one of Italy’s most prominent Christian Democrat politicians,” Tajani went on.
“This man lives freely in Nicaragua. That is unacceptable to us,” Tajani underlined.
“I will always fight for freedom and democracy in the countries of Latin America,” Tajani added.
