Iran: Italy has not taken part in military action, Tajani tells Araghchi

25 Giugno 2026

(Adnkronos) – Italy never joined “any military initiative” during the US-Israel war against Iran – which ended last week with an interim peace deal – and strongly supports freedom of navigation in the key Strait of Hormuz waterway. Furthermore, the re-opening of the Italian embassy in Tehran is “a strong signal of dialogue”, foreign minister Antonio Tajani told Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi on Thursday.

“I spoke with the Iranian Foreign Minister @araghchi,” Tajani wrote in a post on X.

“Italy has never taken part in any military initiative and has never authorised the use of bases for bellicose action against Iran, in the strictest respect of treaties with US,” the post continued.

“I requested a return to full opening of the Strait of Hormuz, facilitating the passage of all Italian cargo ships still stuck there,” the post went on. ”

The reopening of the Italian embassy in Tehran is a strong signal of dialogue, also in view of the resumption of economic and cultural relations,” the post concluded.
