(Adnkronos) – ”Extremely liberal”, so much so that ”he probably won’t open the North Sea” to oil exploration. These are the first words American President Donald Trump chose to describe Andy Burnham, a candidate to succeed British Prime Minister Keir Starmer as leader of the Labour Party and head of government. More moderate words compared to those used in recent months against Starmer, whom Trump called ”weak and uncertain”, in his opinion with mediocre political stature, ”he is no Winston Churchill”. A Starmer ridiculed by Trump, who used falsetto to try and imitate his voice at the White House, marking one of the lowest points in relations between the United States and Great Britain.
Just hours before the British prime minister made his resignation official, Trump, incidentally, did not miss the opportunity to anticipate it and express, again and on his Truth Social, words that were certainly not flattering for Starmer. ”He failed miserably on two fundamental issues: immigration and energy”, the tycoon wrote, before reiterating ”He was no Winston Churchill”.”
How relations between Trump and Burnham will evolve, however, remains to be seen. Also because, when asked what he knew about Burnham, Trump replied: “I don’t know, I think I knew he was, I suppose, the mayor of a city.” The reference is to the position Burnham held since 2017, as mayor of Greater Manchester, before running in the by-election on June 18 this year and being elected Member of Parliament for the Makerfield constituency.
“I heard he’s extremely liberal, very much so, so he probably won’t open up the North Sea waters,” Trump said of him during a meeting with Secretary of State Mark Rutte at the White House.
