Mideast: Italy underlines support for multilateralism, rejects ‘solo’ mission in Strait of Hormuz

(Adnkronos) – Italy on Tuesday reaffirmed its backing for multilateralism, repeating that it will not carry out any solo mission in the blockaded Strait of Hormuz and will only send vessels to patrol the key shipping route under “a European Union or United Nations flag”.

“An international mandate” is needed for a mission under the European or United Nations flag,” foreign minister Antonio Tajani told the lower and upper house of parliament’s foreign affairs and defence committees sitting in joint session on Tuesday.

“We support multilateralism,” he underlined.

The UK and the EU have refused to join the US-Israel war on Iran and to engage militarily in opening the Strait of Hormuz after Iran blocked the key oil conduit in late February. Europen countries have also declined to help the US blockade of Iranian ports which began in the second week in April.
