(Adnkronos) – Initiatives to foster peace and stability, especially in the Mediterranean region, are the basis of Italy’s foreign policy, foreign minister Antonio Tajani told the joint foreign affairs and defence committees of the lower and upper houses of Parliament on Tuesday.

“Italy’s role in foreign policy is that of a leading player in initiatives for peace and stability,” Tajani told the joint committees.

“And there is a particular focus on defending our interests and ensuring stability in the Mediterranean,” Tajani added.

Italy seeks a leading role within multilateral organisations including the European Union, the United Nations and the G7 (Group of Seven most industrialised nations), Tajani underlined.

“This is not only to achieve the foreign policy goals of peace and stability, but also to boost exports, which account for 40% of our gross domestic product (GDP),” Tajani said.
